Full description
This Essaouira workshop specializing in thuja wood welcomes you with a warm, resinous scent the moment you step inside. On the workbench, pieces of wood with golden grain, tools lined up, and pieces in the process of being finished. For four hours, you’ll get hands-on experience: cutting, marquetry, sanding, and finishing. All alongside the artisans of the Essaouira medina, who have been passing down this local expertise for generations.
What to expect at the Essaouira craft workshop
The workshop is broken down into clear steps, guided by the artisans. No show: you do the work, at your own pace, with their guidance and support. The pace is set by the wood, not the other way around.
- Discovering thuja wood: origin, properties, natural patterns
- Choosing your piece: keychain, box, coaster, or frame
- Cutting and assembling the marquetry pieces
- Gradual sanding to reveal the golden grain
- Wax finish and polishing of your piece to take home
Essaouira’s cedar wood craftsmanship: local expertise
Thuja wood marquetry is a signature craft of Essaouira and its region. The artisans of the medina work with this precious wood, native to the Atlas Mountains, for its density, natural grain, and characteristic fragrance. Each piece is composed of juxtaposed fragments that form geometric patterns, ranging from simple to more intricate depending on the artisan’s style. This expertise is passed down from one generation to the next in the medina’s workshops, where apprentices observe for a long time before carving on their own.
Who is this Essaouira craft workshop for?
The workshop is suitable for adults and teens aged 12 and up, whether beginners or craft enthusiasts. No prior experience is required. The activity takes place while seated: no special physical requirements. To round out your exploration of Essaouira, check out our cooking class with Youssef in the same medina.
Tip from the team
Thuja wood retains its scent for a long time: your piece will continue to give off a woody aroma even after several months. Wear clothes that can handle wood dust, and bring a bag to safely transport your finished piece. Since wood absorbs moisture, avoid storing it in a basement or very humid room when you return home.

I booked this workshop because I wanted to do something different from the usual sightseeing. It was calm, authentic and surprisingly emotional to create something by hand with a local artisan. Great experience, even as a complete beginner
A wonderful experience in Essaouira. You don't just watch the craftsman work, you actually take part. The cedar wood smells incredible and the craftsman takes the time to explain every gesture. I left with a little creation that I'll keep for a long time.
