This Agadir raffia workshop with Bouchra begins with the soft, dry scent of the plant fiber. Bouchra welcomes you with a smile and warmth; in her hands, you’ll have an unforgettable experience. On the table lies an array of raffia sorted by color-a dozen vibrant and natural shades. Over the course of two hours, your hands will learn the technique, strand by strand, until the piece is complete.

Bouchra has been working with raffia for over 24 years. As a raffia specialist, she creates shoes, hats, handbags, key chains, and babouche-shaped magnets on a daily basis. Everything is entirely hand-woven in about ten different colors. Raffia is a plant fiber used in Morocco to make baskets, hats, bags, and accessories. Here, her miniature babouches replicate the same techniques on a smaller scale. Welcoming visitors to her workshop is also a way for her to share this labor of patience and to showcase a craft that people often see without knowing how it’s made.
