The history of the Oufella Agadir Kasbah
It’s a gem that should not be missed during your visit.
Oufella Kasbah Agadir is located over 236 meters above the sea. It is perched on the top of a mountain offering a breathtaking view of the city and the ocean. Its name “Agadir Oufella” literally means “the high granary” in the Amazigh language, reflecting its strategic position for centuries.
The Oufella Kasbah was built in 1540 to control Portuguese attacks. It has played a crucial role in the city’s history. You can discover several remains such as the former outer wall supported by towers. But also the grand mosque, the hospital, the Treasury and Post Office building, houses, and alleys. You can also see the Mellah, an old Jewish temple.
But what makes the Agadir Oufella Kasbah even more special is its magnificent sunset. Imagine standing on the heights, watching the dazzling colors of the sun disappearing behind the ocean. It’s a magical moment, and every evening it bathes the city in a golden light.
Despite the damage caused by the 1960 earthquake, the Agadir Oufella Kasbah has been restored to offer visitors an unforgettable experience.
